Ting charges you for what you actually use in three separate categories: minutes, texts, and data — everything else is free. Use it immediately prior to purchasing or activating your first phone or SIM card on Ting to lock in the credit.
Ting is now on the Verizon network. Ting has taken the guesswork out of figuring out which network is best for your needs and automatically provides a phone or SIM for the network they believe is best for your location.
Credit offers and sales on new phones has improved and we have been told similar offers will continue throughout Ting is a mobile virtual network operator MVNO.
That means that they pay the big nationwide carriers for access to their cell towers and mobile infrastructure while Ting provides their own unique features, billing, and customer service.
Ting uses three of the major network providers: Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint. Because they are purchasing service at less expensive wholesale prices they are able to pass those savings on to their customers.
Ting does not have physical stores — everything is done online or over the phone. The biggest differentiator is that Ting only charges you for the minutes, texts, and data that you actually use rather than a set cost.
The second is customer service, as Ting provides far superior customer service than their competitors.
Ting has been around since It is a small cell phone carrier, but it is becoming more popular. The reason for its popularity is the fact that you will only pay for services that you use.
In addition, Ting bills customers at the end of the billing cycle. Most other companies bill at the end of the billing cycle.
Ting also doesn't require any contracts. In general, the company has a bit of a different business model than other carriers.
Rather than seeking to make as much money as possible from each customer, their services are aimed at ensuring that customers keep coming back.
It's also possible for customers to set their own usage limits for data, talk, and text. The company offers a dashboard that is exceptionally easy to use to monitor your usage.
Since Ting is priced based on the amount of data and minutes that you use, it's important to watch this dashboard closely. Check out and compare Ting cell phone plans below, or read on for the rest of the review.
For example, if you need 2 lines with 1 GB of data each, you would select 2 GB of data with the data slider below. Unfortunately, the price of Ting's services is fairly high.
Despite the high price, it's often an affordable option for people who don't use their smartphones much. Also, it can be good for people who wish to have a significant number of lines.
It's only 6 dollars per additional line. However, Ting does not have its own network. Instead, T-Mobile and Sprint networks are used. At the time, I found their prices very reasonable because I didn't use my phone very much.
Also, the customer support was top notch and everyone at the company I corresponded with seemed extremely friendly. However, in mid, I switched to Red Pocket.
And while Red Pocket's customer support isn't as stellar, I've found Red Pocket's pricing to be far more reasonable.
To me, that pricing is outrageous. And I'm guessing some plans from the major carriers provide unlimited data in that price range.
So, the upshot is, in my opinion, that Ting is really not worth using unless you're someone whose usage is on the low, low end.
If you just want to have a phone for emergencies and occasional use, then I suppose Ting makes sense. So, you may ask: why am I bashing Ting?
Well, partly because I feel like I was duped into thinking Ting offered more value than they really do. Like Ting they also have great support. I have had Ting for a little over three years now, and I continue to be impressed with their service and savings.
When I switched to Ting from Verizon I ended up paying the same price for 3 smart phones on Ting as I was paying for 2 dumb phones on Verizon. I recently upgraded to an new iPhone and it was so easy to do on Ting.
I love ting, and have had it for over two years. There are two problems that ting has. So, when I call my husband, and talk for 5 minutes, his phone used 5 minutes and my phone used 5 minutes.
Depending on the amount of data used it is not the best deal. Your email address will not be published. Devices We both upgraded phones during the past year my wife to an iPhone 5 and myself to an even newer flip phone!!!
User-Friendly The website makes it very clear what you will pay for. Ting piggybacks on two of the major US networks, meaning you get the same great coverage as the bigger carriers but also get to benefit from Ting's pay for what you use pricing, fantastic customer support and their risk-free, no contract commitment.
Ting's pay for what you use pricing means that you always pay a fair price for however much talk, text, and data you use. There are no overage charges or hidden fees.
If you want to cap you or your kid's usage though, to stop yourself running up a higher than average bill, you can use Ting's intuitive controls to set different usage caps, restrictions, and alerts for each line on your account.
